Background:The azithromycin (Zithromax) is a macrolide antibacterial agent that is effective against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The aim of the present study was to describe the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the Zithromax Z-200 in healthy subjects and to evaluate the safety of the use of Zithromax Z-200 as an alternative for the treatment of acute bacterial infections.
Methods:This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial that compared the efficacy and safety of the oral Zithromax Z-200 in the treatment of chronic bacterial sinusitis in patients with a body weight of greater than 5 kg and a body surface area of at least 1.2 m2. Twenty-eight healthy subjects (aged 18 to 44 years) were included. Each subject was assigned to receive either 250 mg Zithromax Z-200 or placebo for a period of 8 weeks. Subjects were instructed to wash their mouths thoroughly and not touch their eyes, with no prior exposure to the medication. All subjects underwent a visual analogue scale (VAS) assessment of the VAS score on the first day of treatment, and were allowed to urinate within the previous 7 days, after which they were instructed to stop urinating and to wash their hands.
Results:The mean ± SD body weight was 5.0 ± 0.5 kg in the placebo group and 5.0 ± 0.5 kg in the 250 mg Zithromax Z-200 group. No adverse reactions were reported, except for a low level of consciousness in the patients who experienced a low level of consciousness in the 250 mg Zithromax Z-200 group. A low VAS score was significantly lower in the 250 mg Zithromax Z-200 group compared to the placebo group. No clinically significant adverse reactions were reported in either group. The mean VAS score in the placebo group was significantly higher than in the treatment group (4.6 ± 1.2) and was significantly lower than in the treatment group (5.3 ± 1.1) at both doses.
